TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORK

There are three types of computer network. Lan (Local area netwrk), Man (metro politian Network) and wan (Wide area network).

LAN (Local Area Network)

LAN is a network which is usually used in the single building, on department of campus and covers up to few kilometers. All the components directly connected to the computer. Data are transmitted at the speed of 1 to 20 mb per second.

In the typical LAN configuration one computer is designed as the file server. It share all the software that controls the network, as well as software that can be shared by the computer that can be attached to the LAN.

MAN (Metropolitan Network)

MAN is a network system which is larger than LAN and covers the area of a city or town up to 100 km. It provides network communication between different business houses or bank branches located at different areas or localities with in the city. It might be either private or public. Computers are connected though telephone lines and modems. This network can used guided or unguided media. It ha very high chances of data leakage or security breaks. Example Cable TV Network

GUIDED MEDIA

The Media though which data can be transmitted from one location to another with the help of wore is called guided media. examples Twisted Pair Cable, co-axial cable and fiber optic Cable etc.

UNGUIDED MEDIA

The media though which data can be transmitted from one location to another without help of wire is called unguided media. Signals are normally broadcast through air and thus are available to anyone who has a device capable of receiving them. example : Micro\wave system, Satellite systems, Infrared system and Bluetooth and WIfi.

WAN (Wide Area Network)

WAN spans a large geographical area, often a country or continent and widely dispersed system of computer connection without cable connection. for the data communication, they use telephone lines, microwave link or satellite communication channels rather the though a single physical cable. they are owned by different organizations. It is the combination of may different types of LAN and MAN network. for example Internet.
